Death of an Aged Servant
David Noakes, an old colored servant formerly belonging to Mrs. Patience Peck, of Loudoun County, Virginia, but more recently of Georgetown, died on Saturday at the advanced age of seventy-eight years. David is known as one of the few faithful contrabands, although emancipated by the act of Congress, he remained devoted to the family to whom he belonged and his affections for them knew no bounds. He died and was buried by them. His death bed was memorable, in the anxiety old David expressed to die in his good Old Virginia home. He called for his “young master Julian to bring up his horses and wagon to take him down to his Old Virginia home to die.” David’s attachment to his home and this former owners and family never wavered. We knew him from our infancy, and were deeply attached to him. His funeral yesterday, was attended by a large concourse of mourning friends, including many respectable citizens of Georgetown.—Washington Union.
