It has been my pleasure to be Chairman of the Membership Committee for the last 4 years and to continue in this position for another year.

The Friends’ have many very generous donors, but it is our members that make-up the backbone of the Friends. The income from their annual dues gives us the funds to continue to support and serve the library and community throughout the year.

We are constantly looking for ways to attract new members. The Member-to-Member Gift idea didn’t generate much interest I’m sorry to say. This past year, we have added a new membership category - Business/Professional for $35.00 a year.

We still believe that word of mouth is our best advertisement. Judging from our year-after-year renewals you already know and support the various programs of the Friends. I’d like to suggest that after you read your Chronicle Newsletter pass it on to a neighbor, friend, relative or teacher so they can have an opportunity to learn about the Friends of the Thomas Balch Library. Maybe they will like what they read and want to become a member too. There’s always an application in the newsletter, pamphlets with applications are available at the library or can be obtained from our Friends web site – www.balchfriends.org.

In 2001 the newly renovated Thomas Balch Library was rededicated. Your membership donations helped pay for furnishings, computer and media equipment and archival materials. These are things that we can all see and appreciate, but the work of the Friends does not end there. Your membership dollars continue to add to the library’s collection through the acquisition of books, microfilm, newspapers, maps, photographs, family histories and journals. And your membership dollars provide the printing and mailing cost of this newsletter The Thomas Balch Chronicle – Thank you!
