| The Thomas Balch Library Mural, “A Loudoun County Story” On November 2, 2002 at the Balch Ball, the Friends of the Balch Library proudly presented a wonderful mural that is now placed below the skylight in the library’s Margaret Mercer Room. Painted by renowned muralist, William Woodward, the mural is comprised of four panels, which are 29” x 22’, depicting four aspects of Loudoun County history. It took a dedicated group of volunteers, with a well-developed sense of history, to find both the theme and the artist that would make the mural an authentic and dramatic look at the county’s past. Local Artist Ann Noel chaired both the Artist Selection Committee, and the Theme Committee. Through a very careful and extensive process the Selection Committee chose the artist whose talents and experience were just right for this project. Likewise, the Theme Committee, comprised of several local historians, very systematically developed the historical concepts that would be emphasized in the mural. When completed and placed this fall the mural provides the finishing historic touch on the five-year project to renovate, extend, and improve the Balch Library. There are limited copies of the book: The Thomas Balch Library Mural: A Loudoun County Story. available at Thomas Balch Library for $5.00 each.
