Room Dedications at Balch

With the new expansion of the library and the groundbreaking on September 18, 1999, the Friends of the Thomas Balch Library initiated a project to name various rooms within the library to commemorate individuals who had made lasting contributions to the history of Loudoun county. After many months of evaluation, the following selections were announced at the rededication ceremonies on May 19-20, 2001. Kurt Schwartz was commissioned to paint the portraits of each of the individuals that were selected.

Westmoreland Davis, 1859-1942
Howard Willard Clark, Sr. 1876 - 1960
John Elbert Divine 1911- 1996
Margaret Mercer 1791- 1846
John Janney 1798 - 1872

Each room will be featured on the site at different times with accompanying history about the individual for whom these rooms are named. The final unveiling of the last two portraits occurred November 18, 2001 at the Annual Loudoun History Award ceremony. President Fred Morefield presided over the unveiling of John Janney and Margaret Mercer.
