Oak Hill was built by the fifth President of the Unites States, James Monroe, in 1820. The design of the manor house was made in collaboration with his colleague Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Latrobe, a renowned planner of the day. James Hoban was the principal builder. The formal terraced gardens were constructed in the 1820’s and have been featured in Architectural Digest and Southern Accents. Oak Hill in on the Virginia Landmarks Register and is a National Historic Landmark. It is the only privately owned colonial president’s house.

Daniel F. Preston, PhD, Editor of the Papers of James Monroe, and a professor at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia, will speak about President Monroe. Dr. Preston has published the first of two volumes of a planned eight-volume series about our fifth President.
