Nov 06, 2003 -- The Town of Leesburg announced yesterday that Alexandra S. Gressitt, of Richmond, has been hired to be manager of the Thomas Balch Library.
Gressitt will start Dec. 1 at an annual salary of $63,000. She replaces former manager Jane Sullivan, who left in June, and was selected from a slate of 36 applicants. Sullivan worked for the library for about 15 years, according to LaVonne Markham, who is currently serving as acting manager.
There are currently three other vacant director posts in the town government—at the airport and within the finance and information technology departments. There are a total of 11 department heads in the town government structure that report to the town manager.
The new library manager will further develop and manage the library’s genealogical and photographic collection, conduct research, and work with the Balch Library Commission. She will also plan and conduct education programs and use information technology to upgrade library programs and services, according to the town.
Gressitt previously
worked as archives research services director of the Library of Virginia in
Richmond. She has also worked as the curator of manuscripts and archives for
the William Henry Smith Memorial Library in Indianapolis, IN; archivist for
the City of Hattiesburg, MS; and assistant university archivist for the University
of Southern Mississippi. She received a master’s degree in archival
management from North Carolina State University and a master’s of arts
in history from the University of Washington.
